The
Duke Talent Search 2008-2009
Every
year Duke University sponsors a Talent Search among seventh grade students in
the United States. Eligible students must have scored at the 95th percentile
or higher on either of their two most recent grade level achievement, aptitude,
mental ability, or approved state criterion-referenced test. Ideally, that
would be grades 5 and 6. Scores from mental ability tests must have been
taken within the past two years. Students sign up and take either the SAT or ACT test. This is the same test
taken as college entrance exams. There is a cost of $60 for the ACT and $73
for the SAT paid to the testing companies.
Students are honored on the state and
national levels if they achieve exceptional scores on either the ACT or SAT.
Students are invited to a State Ceremony if they meet at least one of
the following criteria: ACT - English
or Math>20,
ACT Reading or Science >21;
SAT-Math or Verbal >510
Students are invited to a Grand Ceremony at Duke University if they
meet at least one of the following: ACT
- English or Math >28
ACT - Reading >30
ACT - Science Reasoning >27
SAT - Math or Verbal >650
All students who participate receive information from all over the United
States inviting them to summer/regular school programs for talented and gifted
students. Former Coppinville Duke participants have, through these
programs, participated in writing, science, mathematics and archaeological
programs throughout the United States.
