Course Description
Intro to Art:
Open to 7th and 8th Graders
This class is to learn basic art and drawing skills. Students should have an interest in Visual Arts (not crafts). In this class you will learn techinques to better your drawing skills. Students will explore different art mediums such as shading, oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolor paints and mix media. Students will learn about various art styles like perspective drawing, shading techinques, mixing/blending color pencils, layering, overlapping, Op-Art, Pop Art, abstract, and realistic art. Students are required to draw in their sketchbook every week and also complete a larger portfolio assignment.
Learning Objectives:
- Students will develop critical and creative thinking skills necessary for understanding and producing art.
- Students will use the elements and principles of design to create original works of art from direct observation and to express ideas and personal experiences.
- Students will choose and evaluate a range of subject matter and ideas to communicate intended meaning in artworks.
- Students will identify and compare the characteristics of works of art from various cultures, time periods, and places.
- Students will understand and use the vocabulary of art in describing and responding to their own artwork and the work of others.
- Students will practice and demonstrate proper use of art materials, including good craftsmanship in their artwork and safe handling and clean up of classroom supplies.
Advanced Art:
8th Graders only
Advanced art is for 8th graders who have had Intro to Art and have maintained an "A" average. This class is for students who are interested in art and want to continue to take art into High School. Requirements: Have taken a basic drawing class. Know and understand how to shade, shading terms, how to draw in perspective, have used oil pastels, chalk pastels, and watercolor paints. Students in this class will gain more knowledge of basic art skills. They will complete some more advanced drawings and projects than intro to art. Students will also learn the basics of painting and color mixing. Students who complete this class with a high average and show a talent in Visual Arts will be able to take Level 2 Art in High School with teacher permission.
